2). Spring Thaw Event “Mike Smith”

P1010559This years Spring Thaw 2014 started in Squamish BC on Friday morning with 75 pre 1980 sports cars (some post 1980 were also admitted if special versions or cars of long running production) .  My son Chris and I drove over in the Mini 30 VTEC and stayed in North Vancouver the night before . We headed to Squamish first thing in the morning.  Ther was a good representation from the Minis which included an English Moke, a pickup and 6 sedans. The first day saw us cover about 460km using back roads  (can you say twisty and fun) ending the day in Kamloops where we had an excellent banquet dinner that evening.

We were up bright and early and on the road again on Saturday, enjoying more fun roads 450km, and some intermittent weather, including sun, rain, more rain, snow, sleet, hail, and more sun. We ended this day in Penticton where the weather stayed nice enough to spend the early evening enjoying beer and appies on the patio. another good banquet was held on Saturday night and lot’s of draw prizes were given out.

Sunday was a shorter day with just over 250km, driving on roads like Green Mountain road, and the Old Yale road on our way from Penticton to Hope.  The event wrapped up with a lunch and the final awards presentations.

Chris and I then scooted off driving to Tswassen to catch the BC Ferry home to Victoria.

2.  April Meeting.

We had a fantastic meeting hosted by Scott (General Manger) and his team at BMW/MINI Victoria Dealership with plenty of food and drinks, as well as, an assortment of MINI swag to be taken away by our members courtesy of Jason (Parts Manager).  The new 3-cylinder MINI Cooper was available for test drives and one of our members had an opportunity to take it out prior to the start of the meeting.  Mike gave us a detailed report of the weekend activities in Harrison Hot Springs that provided the basis of the Mini Meet West 2015 proposal being co-presented by  Vancouver Mini Car Club and the Victoria Minis Car Club.

7.  Last Event.

The Old English Car Club once again did a great job hosting the 9th Annual Restoration and Swap Meet along with the Saanich Historical Artifacts Society (Pictures below).  It was an excellent turnout of English marques, with a great variety of Mini/MINIs models that made for a fun event.  There was plenty of interest in the Club stand and the mini garage as seen in the photos.  The sunshine was a welcome relief from past weekends that were full of rain. Our newest members: Amanda, Richard and William and Bob (their ’62 Austin Mini); and Ben with the 13×7 rims; as well as Allan’s Super Cooper S; Alan’s mighty Moke; Dwayne’s Mini 1.3i Growler; and Linda’s Mini  Mayfair Automatic found themselves surrounded by paparazzi throughout the day.  All said and done, it was a great event and we are looking forward to the events that are coming up.

Have a Heck-of-a-time Drivin’  Happy Easter!

Dwayne Kalynchuk just emailed a couple pictures of the 2014 Mini Cooper S he spotted here in town at the speedway. Earl was happy to meet his new Mini Cooper S cousin. Dwayne I think that new mini would look really nice in your garage next to Earl! It’s even the right color!
